(12) Idol-worship in pre-Islamic Arabia
OUTLINE OF CHAPTER
Religious conditions in pre-Islamic Arabia, polytheism verses monotheism (Islamic perspective), do not give God any compeers, following ancestral beliefs blindly, worshipping of idols bring us nearer to God. Worship of angels and jinn: God chosen for himself daughters, God has begotten a son, angels as female deities, worship of jinn.
Mediators and intercessors: worship of intercessors, saints and angels are powerless, God’s omniscience and intercessors.
Superstitions related to idol worship: arbitrary prohibitions due to superstitions, conjectures and artificial rituals, dedicating shares to deities, arbitrary prohibitions and questioning grant of free will, slaying children, arbitrary rules related to idol worship, foretelling of future through divination.
Why worship one God alone and not idols: all deities are but one God, God alone is your protector and not idols, parable of frailty of spider’s web, God alone is your sustainer, God alone guides unto the truth, idols do not answers prayers, deities cannot create anything, can idols have shared in creation? Can idols govern the heavens? Multiplicity of divine powers and chaos, parable of several masters.
Sin of idol worship: unforgivable sin (idol worship is invoking satan), all works in vain, prayers for forgiveness not accepted, man’s ingratitude as a cause of idol worship: remembering God in hard-time and invoking idols in good-times, birth of a healthy child and share in divinity.
